SPEAKABLE

SPEAKABLE
Breaking the digital barriers of stuttering

Stuttering affects over 80 million people worldwide.

It is a communication disorder in which the flow of speech is involuntarily broken by repetitions, prolongations, or sudden stoppages of sounds and syllables.

For many, daily interactions are a continuous struggle. One that is often exacerbated when engaging with audio and video communication based platforms. The new remote working environment greatly compounded these challenges for millions who stutter, or suffer from other forms of speech disfluency; making it even more difficult to communicate in a work environment—especially when presenting or simply attempting to express their thoughts or ideas.

In 2022, I, along with McCann Health NJ creative leadership (Bruno Abner; Alessandro Fruscella; Jillian Watkins) began spearheading an IPG, inter-agency development team on the creation of SpeakABLE—a prototype application that helps facilitate video conferencing for those who stutter or suffer other speech disfluencies.

How it works

When video conferencing or presenting slides, SpeakABLE allows the user to type onscreen, in real time, with the help of full predictive type technology. By providing an alternative way of communication when the user encounters blocks, prolongations, or repetitions, SpeakABLE can help those with speech disfluencies level the playing field and be fully heard.

*Due for release in 2024. SpeakAble will work on ALL virtual conferencing platforms, be free to download, and open-source.
